Lie down in a neutral position and think about how sound is hitting not only your ears but your whole body. Listen as if your whole body was an ear.

Action notes: I lay on the bed, listening to the sounds of everyone talking downstairs. Feeling the waves of sound like something palpable, material, washing over me. My relation to the sound was not about what folks were saying or any interpretation of the hubbub, but just the “weight” of the sound washing over me.
Action constraints: Performed in the context of an extended family dinner, surrounded by distraction and noise.
